Committed from an early age to being a positive changemaker, my 28+ year career has focused on working alongside communities in Aotearoa and the UK, creating award-winning and innovative initiatives in both countries. Based in Ōtautahi Christchurch, my mahi takes me around Aotearoa.
My work is often described as a bridge between sectors and silos — translating, connecting and bringing people together to work in collaborative and innovative ways. Ideas are grounded by checking in with communities, then turned into reality.
I am the creator of The Wellbeing Game, River of Flowers, Places of Tranquillity, The Good Shop, Flourish Kia Puāwai and more, and am skilled at initiating, developing and managing successful community partnership projects. This work is supported by a large network across local, national and international sectors.
A lifelong learner, I hold a BSc in Ecology, a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health, and have completed academic study in Psychology and Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
In the early stages of the Christchurch earthquake recovery I was seconded to help set up the Christchurch Earthquake Recovery Authority (CERA) Wellbeing Team and was on the steering group for the fabulous All Right? wellbeing campaign based in Community & Public Health, CDHB.
At the heart of my work is a commitment to equity, wellbeing and collaboration, guided by knowledge, Kaupapa and care, and shaped with communities to create lasting change.
"There’s so much beauty in this collective, but deeply personal remembering of the February 2011 earthquake. I'm forever thankful to Michelle Whitaker and River of Flowers for giving me a way to just be in the day without having to get my thoughts together."
Leanne Curtis, Earthquake Recovery Initiatives
"We have all been very impressed with your approach to this exercise, from formally proposing an initial process and timeline, to skillfully structuring the survey which addressed the questions that {we} thought important, and to the final report.
Your approach has been comprehensive, technically sound and professional."
Kathryn and Robin, Healthy Christchurch
'Michelle is a lovely friend and colleague who I originally met many years ago after the Christchurch earthquakes. She has led and been part of many fabulous things - temporary and permanent and is generous and widely respected.'
